Overwhelmed by Business Finances? Here’s Where to Start (Even If You’re Not Ready to Hire Help Yet)
As a business owner—especially if you’re balancing work with family, life, and everything in between—keeping your finances organized can feel like a full-time job in itself.
You’re not alone.
I’ve worked with dozens of small business owners, particularly mompreneurs, who’ve shared the same quiet worry:
“I know I should be looking at my numbers more… but I don’t know where to start.”
Whether you're a few years in or just getting things off the ground, financial overwhelm is one of the biggest reasons entrepreneurs stay stuck.
💡 So, Where Do You Start?
If you’re not quite ready to hire a bookkeeper or financial coach, that’s okay. There are still powerful steps you can take today to move your business forward.
Here’s a gentle roadmap I recommend to anyone trying to make sense of their business finances:
✅ 1. Get Everything in One Place
Start by pulling together your business bank statements, credit card statements, and any accounting software or spreadsheets you’ve been using. Even if it’s messy, centralizing everything helps eliminate the “unknowns” that lead to stress.
✅ 2. Separate Business and Personal Expenses
If your business and personal money are mixed, this is the time to draw the line. Open a separate business bank account and start tracking all business-related transactions there. It’s a game-changer for clarity, taxes, and peace of mind.
✅ 3. Review Your Monthly Expenses
What are your recurring subscriptions? Are there any tools or services you’re paying for that aren’t adding value anymore? Cancel what you don’t need and highlight what supports your growth.
✅ 4. Know Your Revenue (and Your Profit!)
Many business owners only track income—but true sustainability comes from understanding profit. That’s your income minus all your expenses.
Profit is what pays you, fuels growth, and keeps the business healthy.
If you’re unsure about where you stand, my free Financial Health Checklist can help you identify the exact numbers to track each month.
✅ 5. Set a Monthly Finance Date With Yourself
Block 30 minutes each month to review your numbers. It doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to happen. I recommend putting it on your calendar with a little coffee or a playlist you love. Make it your CEO check-in.
